how do you make the columns in a table even in word 2000???

Divide the table width by the number of columns, then set the width of the
columns this big. You can use the Alt key to have more control if you want
to resize by dragging cell borders.

Click on View - Toolbars - Tables and Borders and click the Distribute
Columns Evenly icon (example toolbar at
http://www.allaboutoffice.co.uk/wordtabshad.htm )or click on Tables -
AutoFit - Distribute Columns evenly.
