I assume you don't want the simple answer, "type them". If you want Word to
figure out for you what the representation of the number should be, you need
a field.

Start by typing an equal sign, the number in arabic numerals, and the
formatting switch as follows (upper case or lower case according to what you
want the result to be):

= 2004 \*ROMAN

Select the whole expression and press Ctrl+F9 to make it into a field.

Type them as ordinary text. There are Unicode characters for roman numerals,
but they appear only in "large" Unicode fonts such as Arial Unicode MS and
are quite ugly.
