I have been given a word document which I need to copy some of the text out
of to another document, some of the text has black dots directly below it and
I am unable to copy this text

Is there an option i need to check/uncheck to enable me to copy this text?

It sounds like the text is formatted as hidden text and the display of
hidden text is "on" in the source document and "off" in the destination
document.

Check ToolsOptionsViewFormatting MarksHidden Text. Make sure it is
checed in both documents.
