Default why does my new word xp file window flash and lock up?

I can only create a new document by opening an old document and asking for a
new. If I open word to create a new file, either when I save or ask for a
new doc. the top bar begins flashing and the window locks up. I own legaly
this XP Office suite of programs. I do not have these problems with the
other applications.

This is indication of a dialog box opening behind the current screen. The
usual cause is the Norton AV Office plug-in, which should be turned off from
Norton AV options.
