Default Opening corrupted Word docs

My home system (Microsoft XP) crashed. It's been repaired, but I am unable to
open most of the Word documents. All I get are boxes and symbols. If I open
in Notepad, there are a few words. Some docs open fine, but very few. Can
anyone offer suggestions. Other programs, e.g., Quicken is working OK and
able to open all files. This is my first time in a discussion group, so
please forgive any protocol foul-ups.
