Default Formatting text boxes

Is there a way to set Word XP so that text boxes have a default font, font
size, border, and fill. Also, can they be set so that the first letter
doesn't automatically be capitalized after hitting a space.

Sorry, Word can't do most of what you're asking for.

You can format any text box's border and fill, then right-click and select
Set AutoShape Defaults. All other text boxes or other drawing objects you
create afterward will have the same border and fill. If I'm correct, this
setting doesn't carry over to other documents; that is, the "default" is
stored only in that document, not in a template.

All text boxes and other drawing objects start with text in Normal style.
You can apply another style or directly format the text, but the only way to
change the default is to modify the Normal style -- which also changes it
for everything else.

The capitalization is the result of an option in Tools AutoCorrect
Options, "Capitalize first word of sentence". Uncheck that option to stop
the behavior -- but that also stops it for regular text.
