Default field codes in file paths

When I put in a file path I get the field codes at the beginning and end. I
want only the file path (example: x:/active clients/joe smith/corr...) etc.
This is what it used to look like, now it looks like this: FILENAME
\x:/active clients/joe smith...

How do I get it back to "normal" file paths? I have a feeling I turned
something on or off. If I do CNTRL SHIFT F9 it takes them off...

Alt+F9 switches between field codes and field results. It's a toggle --
repeating the keystroke switches it back again.

Ctrl-Shift-F9 unlinks fields (changes them from fields to the result text).

Delete the "x:/active clients/joe smith..." from your document. Then press
Alt-F9 to toggle display of field codes. This should get you what you want.
