Default Word files from Macs

I receive Word files from a number of Mac users - private clients without
corporate support.

Some files come through as *.doc and are fine.
Others just need .doc adding.
Some have a name but even adding .doc does not allow me to open them in Word.
And some appear with the name 'noname'.

What do I have to get them to do so I can read these files?
