Default Help! - best way to convert a PDF to Word

I have been asked to do some research to find some of the best programs to
convert a PDF to a Word document. Any suggestions?

The best is probably Adobe Acrobat (not Acrobat reader). It is also
expensive.

Virtually any such program is really an OCR application, it will make
errors. It is possible that Acrobat uses actual text rather than OCR; I
don't know.

I use ScanSoft's converter.

All converted files that I've seen are a hodge-podge of formatting. This is
the case with any OCR file or converted file in general. If I am going to
use the result as the basis for a new document I strip all formatting by
saving as a text file, reopening in Word and applying appropriate styles.
This is a lot of work.

If there is a paper or pdf form that I want to fill out once, I use the
FormFiller utility that came with PaperPort. It has nothing to do with Word
but is at least as easy as typing on a typewriter and you can save the
results. The resulting filled in form can be edited (the parts you type in).

How to convert Adobe Acrobat Reader (*.pdf) files to Word 2003

The *best* way is to ask the owner of the original file to send you a copy.
This will work in a pinch.
