Default Automatic page breaks are missing in Word. What happened?

For a couple of weeks, Word has not been showing page breaks at the end of a
page. Instead, continued typing disappears unless I insert a manual page
break.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | check the "Background
repagination" box | OK.

Thanks. The box is checked, but grey shaded, so I can't get into it anyway.
Still no luck. I've tried system restore as well. Any other ideas?

Go to Format | Columns and click on the box for One, even if it appears to
be already selected.
