Headers and footers do not function in one part of document
I need this help for work. I inherited a multi-chapter document and was able
to correct the headers and footers for all but one chapter. My problem with Chapter 9 is that the page numbers in the footers do not increment as they are supposed to and as they do for the rest of the document. Whatever odd and even number I enter last for the odd and even footers is what all of the odd and even footers show respectively. Closing and re-opening the document does not help. The set up is different odd and even footers within each chapter. I've read the Help instructions for Headers and Footers and followed them. I have set continuous and page breaks at the beginning and end of the chapter and in the chapters before and after. Page setup is set properly for type of break and for different odd and even headers and footers. I use the View/Header and Footer menu to enter information into the headers and footers. I tried to reproduce the chapter by copying text into new blank pages forming a new document. However when I entered the header and footer information the same thing happens. The numbers I enter stay the same for all of the odd and even page numbers in the footers. Is there some way I can delete the internal coding for the headers and footers to start over fresh? The only other option I can think of is to retype the chapter and try to insert it into the document, which I would prefer not to do if I can avoid it. Thanks for any help you can give. |

You need to use Show Next to go to the header/footer of each section where
the numbering is not incrementing properly. Click Format Page Number on the Header and Footer toolbar and set the numbering to "Continue from previous section." Also, make sure that the number is inserted as a PAGE field and not a text number. -- Suzanne S. Headers and footers do not function in one part of document
I've managed to get page numbers going from 7.03-2 through 7.03-5 working in
the footers. The good news is they are incrementing automatically. However, the format I need them in is 9-1 through 9-5. I do not know where the 7.03 is coming from. How do I set up this formatting? I do not know how to create a PAGE field but perhaps that is moot now. Can you help me format for 9-1 though 9-5? Thanks. "Suzanne S. Headers and footers do not function in one part of document
A PAGE field is inserted when you use the Insert Page Number button the
Header and Footer toolbar. In the Format Page Number dialog, there is an option to "Include chapter number," which it appears you may be doing; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm for that. If you're not including the chapter number this way, then (a) it won't appear in the TOC or any cross-references and (b) it's probably typed in manually. -- Suzanne S.
