Default why does the number of total pages appear in the footer?

In the footer of my documents, I have inserted the basic autotext, "Page X of
Y". The footer displays accurately on print preview, but on the hard copy,
it prints "Page X of X" (i.e., page 2 prints "Page 2 of 2", page 3 prints
"Page 3 of 3", etc.). Any suggestions?
