Default multiple columns cause page eject

i use Word 2003 and when i take a list and make multiple columns of it, Word
skips to the next page before displaying these columns, leaving a great white
space on the previous page.
- is this normal (or is something wrong with my Word or settings)?
- can i prevent this page eject?

you might want to first insert a "section break" continuous.

Insert
break
section break
