Default minimize and maximize buttons missing

I just opened up word and the minimize and maximize buttons are missing. I
still have the 'ask a question' and 'close window' buttons just not the other
two.

The buttons on the title bar are for the window, which is your document.

They are missing from your title bar? (That's the one that says "Document1 -
Microsoft Word" or whatever.)

No they are missing from the grey toolbar that would minimize or maximize the
document within word itself.

You are not listening. In current versions of Word, the controls on the
title bar are for the document because each document is in a separate
window. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/SDIMDI.htm
