my photos open as a text message which is garbled. What did I do??

If you're trying to *open* photos as Word documents, then this is to be
expected. You need to *insert* the photos using Insert | Picture | From
File. If you have already inserted photos in a document, and they are
displaying as text between braces, then press Alt+F9.
