Default Why do my maths equations show strange symbols?

Hi, I'm using word 2007. Whenever I try to add maths equations (by using
insert object microsoft equation 3.0), I get strange symbols instead of
what I intend to type out (e.g. "+" or "-" turns into some strange font). The
same happens when I try to open word documents that have maths equations in
them. All maths equations that I try to view turn into strange symbols that
do not make sense.

Can anyone help?

Start the equation editor. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click
Style and choose Define. In the resulting dialog, make sure that the L.C.
Greek, U.C. Greek, and Symbol items are set to the Symbol font, and all the
others are set to Times New Roman.
