Some how, I inadvertantly asked word to show paragraph returns, spaces
between words, etc. Can someone please direct me as to how to reset things
so that such do not show up on screen.

Jerry,

On one of your toolbars you should see something that looks like a fat
reverse P. Actually it looks like the paragraph mark you see in your
document. Click it once.

If you can't find it then press CTRL+Shift and the * key.

Click on the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar or press Ctrl+*.
