I was writing a paper for school, and was eight pages in when my computer
froze and shut itself down. I cannot find my paper anywhere. I know that my
documents autosave every 10 min. Any suggestions on where I can find my
paper?

Did you save the file? If you created an 8 page document, you would have had
ample time to hit the save button.

There is not and never has been an AutoSave in Word; there is AutoRecover,
and your recovered document should have been presented to you the next time
you started Word. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/general/AutomaticSave.htm

No, it is not necessary ever to have saved. I've been having problems where
IE hangs my computer so hard that I have to cut the power to it and restart.
Every time I do, Word 2003 presents me a recovered Document1 with a single
space in it (I type that space when I start Word in order to keep Document1
open all day as a scratch pad). Since this recovered Document1 is identical
to the Document1 that was created by Word at startup aside from the space I
have yet to type into it, I opt to delete it, but it is there.

Then there _is_ an "AutoSave"? What about the constant refrain here,
"If nothing was saved, there's nothing to recover"?

No, there is still no AutoSave. There is an AutoRecover. If you shut down
Word or the document without saving, there will be nothing to recover
(AutoRecovery backups are deleted). But if Word hangs or the computer
crashes, you should get an AutoRecovery backup.

Hmm, that's an "objectivist" attitude -- it takes responsibility for
its own mistakes, but it won't help you with yours!

(I never forget to Save after the first sentence or so ...)

It's not entirely unusual for me to complete an entire one-page document for
a client before saving, but that's because it often takes me that long to
figure out what the filename should be. I have one client who faxes me
letters to be typed, often without any address information except "Dear
FirstName." From the context of the letter I can usually figure out who
FirstName might be and then save the document as LastName, FirstName Date in
the appropriate (alphabetically divided) subfolder in his Correspondence
folder. Ordinarily, though, I make it a practice to save within the first
five minutes (and often such a letter takes less than five minutes to type).
