Default Puzzling file history from Word 2007 (and Wordpad)

In Word 2007 (and Wordpad, for that matter), the Open command followed
by clicking on the down arrow in File name will show a list of
historical files or programs recently opened or run , (e.g.* .exe,
*.htm, etc), whether or not they have ever been opened with a word
processor. I can see this for *.doc or *.rtf or *.txt files, but why
the others, and how do I get rid of them?

Thanks
