Default 'selecting' the item?

When moving or copying an item, how do I 'select' the item?
thank you.

It depends on the "item." In Word, you can select text using the mouse, but
there are also numerous keyboard shortcuts, which will be found in the
"Editing and moving text and graphics" section of the "Keyboard shortcuts"
Help topic.
