Default Footers/Headers and templates stopped working

I'm on B2TR, and at some point things went wrong. When I click on footers,
for instance, I'm unable to see a list of the template footers and select
one. Going in to edit a footer, I can't select the option to have a page
number at the bottom of the page -- the option is greyed out.

Is this a known bug or is there a fix for this?

I would greatly appreciate some pointers, I'm evaluating Office 2007 for
university purposes.
