Default header and footer problems

I am having problems with my header of my document. I wish to display,
MLA format for my header. That means .5 from top, .5 from right:
Lastname #
My page borders are 1 inch, and i cant get my header to go to .5 inch
from sides, also, it comes out shaded when i need it a solid black like
the rest of the text.
Any help please!!

never mind, i realized that the shading just signifies it as a seperate
field, but doesnt actually print that way!

In case you haven't already figured it out, you can add 0.5" negative
indents to the Header paragraph to extend it beyond your 1" margins.
