Default Backspace isn't deleting highlighted text.

In Word, I used to be able to highlight a specific amount of text and hit the
backspace button to get rid of it, but now if I want to get rid of it, I have
to hit Delete. How do I get the backspace option back?j

Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection.
