Ok I have a professor here who uses MS Word on a MAC. When he opens a
file from its location it opens with nothing but symbols and lines for
a good amount of lines before any real text shows up. And then for a
bunch of pages after the text it is more symbols and lines.

But when he opens word first then opens the document from within word
it opens fine and all is good. Any ideas on a fix for this.

If it were the other way around, I'd suspect he had "Files of type" set to
"Recover Text from Any File" (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm). In this situation, is
the file actually opening in Word? If the file associations were damaged and
it was opening in, say, Works or PhotoShop or something, then that would be
an explanation.
