when open a microsoft word attachment it is very large , have to go to view/
normal to get it ti the format i want. What settings to i have to change to
get it to open at normal

AFAIK, Word reopens docs at the level of Zoom at which they were last saved &
closed. There is no standard command to 'Open @ XX%', although it can be
controlled through a macro/VBA.

If this is Word 2003, perhaps it's opening in Reading Layout view. You can
prevent this by clearing the "Allow starting in Reading Layout" check box on
the General tab of Tools | Options.
