They used to be there! Any idea how to get them back??

Version of Word? Which font formatting keys? Do you have the formatting
toolbar displayed?

wasn't helpful,(so as to read further on the thread), but I've printed the
document out and may eventually "get" it.

Well, the general idea is that if you're missing buttons, you can restore
them, or you can reset the toolbar to get them back. First, however, make
sure that you're displaying the entire toolbar. If you're showing the
Standard and Formatting toolbars on a single row, you won't see all the
buttons.
