See the article "Creating sequentially numbered documents (such as
invoices)" at:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/NumberDocs.htm

or

See the article"How to save a document using a filename that gets
incremented

by 1 each time if the filename already exists " at:

Default numbering doc files

There are endless macros that do exactly this, but they are intended for new
documents. For existing ones - and with only ten anyway -- open them and
insert the numbers manually. Put the number into a document property (Files
Properties Custom) then use a DocProperty field to display the value.
