Default Document Shading in Word 2003?

Is it possible to apply shading to an entire document?
I'd like to have a single color throughout (so applying color to all
paragraphs will not work).
Placing a filled rectangle in the header and sizing it to cover the
whole page works, but there must be a better way that I'm missing.
Thanks!

Depends if you want it to print or not? Try Format Background Colour.
