Default My character style has become a "paragraph and character" style

In Word 2003 I defined a character style. Now, somehow, it's changed to
style type = paragraph and character. And in the Modify Style dialogue, the
Style Type line is grayed-out, so I can't change it back to a character style.

What's happened? And how can I fix it?

Thanks.

Styles of the "linked (paragraph and character)" type can be "painted" on
selected text in a paragraph; this allows you to include part of a paragraph
in a TOC. The procedure links a character style to the style (hence the name
"linked").

Linked paragraph styles were introduced in Word 2002, where they actually
replaced the ordinary paragraph styles (but used the same name). Word 2007
just reintroduces the old kind of paragraph styles. [Thanks to Jonathan West
for his explanation of this in a different forum.]

Word 2007 allows you to prevent the use of linked styles, even if the linked
style type exists (and it always does, since the built-in headings are
this type). Here's how to do it: Check the "Disable linked styles" option on
the Styles pane. Note that you can still have two styles (seemingly) in the
same paragraph by using a style separator (add the Style Separator command
to the Quick Access Toolbar) or a hidden paragraph mark.

Observe that no version of Word allows you to change the type of a created
style; this is quite normal. For a *custom* style, you can delete it and
then recreate it as another type, but for the built-in styles, that won't be
possible.
