Default Lines across the page

A friend who has no computer savvy brings roughly typed documents to me to
be 'tidied up'.
Inevitably there are horizontal lines across the full width of the text
area (in print view) and do what I will I cannot shift them. Even trying to
push them of the page results in a new line at the top of the next sheet,
but leaves one still at the bottom of the last (
I fancy that it may have something to do with a 'style', but how I get out
of it without re-doing the whole document I don't know.
