i'd like to delete all of the heading styles in a document and replace them
with the styles that are in my normal.dot file.
i can't figure out how to delete the styles that i don't want.

somehow my styles got changed in some documents from what they are in the
word 2003 normal.dot file

any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

Default Can't update styles

There are several ways to delete styles in Word. For example, you can use
the Organizer dialog box (Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, click the Organizer
button). Also, you can delete styles via the Styles and Formatting task pane
(Format | Styles and Formatting); just right-click the style name and choose
Delete from the context menu. For (most) built-in styles, "deleting"
actually means resetting them to their default formatting.

Note, however, that the built-in heading styles (called Heading 1, Heading
2, etc. in English language versions of Word) cannot be deleted. What you
can do is modify them to suit your needs. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styl...ifyAStyle.html.

A third approach is to use Find and Replace to apply custom styles instead
of the currently applied (built-in or custom) heading styles. But there are
some good reasons to actually make use of the built-in headings in Word; see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ingStyles.html.

Default Can't update styles

hi stefan,

thank you for replying.
the styles that i want to change are heading 2-5.
they are correct in the normal.dot file.
i copy them from normal.dot to the open document, but the changes are not
actually made to the open document.
there are things for other languages in the documents in question that i did
not ever select, so i'm not sure how they got there.
for example, the style has "adjust spacing between latin and asian text" and
"adjust spacing between latin and asian numbering".
i can't figure out how to delete that from the style.

there is a style called "heading 3 chart" that keeps appearing, even though
i delete it.
it isn't one that i created

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you.
Tracy

What settings remain incorrect after you've copied the styles? Font
settings? Paragraph settings (such as line spacing, spacing before/after)?
Or language settings only?

Note that language formatting might very well have been applied to text as
direct formatting (for example via pasting).
