linking documents
Hi ?B?dA==?=,
I am trying to link a document to a master document to make a manual. but every time i insert the file as an object and like it to the file it only shows the first page of the other document. how can i get ti to show all of the pages You'd need to link the file using a different method. Try Insert/File. Select the file, then click the little arrow next to the "Insert" button (note: I'm assuming Word 2002 or 2003). That will let you choose to link to the file. Tip: this inserts a IncludeText field "under the covers". (Actually, you can see it by pressing Alt+F9 to toggle the field codes.) An interesting thing about this field is that you can edit the content in the "master document", then press Ctrl+Shift+F7 to save your changes back to the source file. If you want to :-) Cindy Meister INTER-Solutions, Switzerland http://homepage.swissonline.ch/cindymeister (last update Jun 8 2004) http://www.word.mvps.org This reply is posted in the Newsgroup; please post any follow question or reply in the newsgroup and not by e-mail :-) |

linking documents
Cindy, I think this is what I want to do, but can I clarify it with you?
I currently have 15+ files (combined pages of about 400+) I'd like to combine into one for ease of updating on my end. However the other users will only need to look at ONE of the files at a time, that I've linked into my "master" doc. So if I make my changes in the "Master" doc and by pressing the Ctrl+Sh+F7 after I've saved my "master" it will automatically update all 'linked' files? Thanks... Hi Barb,
I think this is what I want to do, but can I clarify it with you? I currently have 15+ files (combined pages of about 400+) I'd like to combine into one for ease of updating on my end. However the other users will only need to look at ONE of the files at a time, that I've linked into my "master" doc. So if I make my changes in the "Master" doc and by pressing the Ctrl+Sh+F7 after I've saved my "master" it will automatically update all 'linked' files? Yes, that ought to work :-) But do note that you have to have the field(s) selected when you press Ctrl+Shift+F7. This only works on selected IncludeText fields. So Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Shift+F7. And note that you don't need to have saved your "master", first. Ctrl+Shift+F7 will work at all times (as long as your IP is in an IncludeText field, or one or more such fields are in the current selection). Cindy Meister |

linking documents
Hi
I am having the same problem as below ie when I inset a linked word file into another Word file you only see the first page of the document. Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this issue? Use Insert | File (Word 2003) or Insert tab | Object | Text from File (Word
2007) instead. In the Insert File dialog box, locate the file to insert. Click the arrow next to the Insert button, and choose to Insert as Link. This inserts an INCLUDETEXT field which can be updated with F9. And changes made to the text displayed by such a field can be saved back to the original (source) document by pressing Ctrl+Shift+F7. For more, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfm...ldscontent.htm. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Stonsey" wrote in message ... linking dox, e.g., WORD & Excel
Dear Stefan and Cindy,
The Insert/File works great for WORD-to-WORD connections (use it often), but it doesn't solve the problem for links between WORD and Excel. With 2003, I have the same problem described by t and Barb - when in a WORD doc and link to an Excel worksheet, it will only show the worksheet to the end of that page. The substance of the worksheet will not wrap over to the next page(s). This is a new problem with v. 2003; I've been using this feature successfully since the 90's. It's an important feature for reports, and now, I find myself spending A LOT OF TIME having to work around this, when before 2003, it was a snap! Surely there is a setting deep in the caverns of WORD that will fix this, but I can't find it. I've done everything I can think of on the Excel end (re-formatting, yada-yada-yada, to no avail). Please HELP! Thanks. -- The Fairygodmother "Stefan Blom" wrote: Use Insert | File (Word 2003) or Insert tab | Object | Text from File (Word 2007) instead. linking dox, e.g., WORD & Excel
Dear Cybertaz,
Thanks so much for your response. I am certain that I am now using Object-link to file (I use Insert file with WORD to WORD stuff -- unrelated to this issue; that works just fine). I am also absolutely certain that in prior versions, linking to an Excel spreadsheet that required going past the end of the WORD page to show the entire worksheet worked. I have hard copy evidence in my files. (Anyway, what use would such a feature be if you never knew if it would show the entire worksheet?) However, it is also true that prior versions did not call it "Object linking," but rather something like "link to Excel spreadsheet." Mere semantics, maybe, but the process was very different when I upgraded to 2003 (to expand it, I'm sure). Either the upgraded process has a bug in it, or there is a setting I am missing. Any ideas? -- The Fairygodmother "CyberTaz" wrote: Are you certain you're using the Insert *File* method and not Insert *Object*? The former inserts the data as a Word Table which continues on for as many pages as necessary, whereas the latter inserts the workbook as an OLE object which cannot - and never could - span a page break. P.S. -- I use "insert Object" b/c it's important that I be able to produce
these 10 reports monthly by just updating the link (and making a few pertinent changes in the WORD doc, of course). It's my understanding that I cannot do that with "Insert File." Thanks. -- The Fairygodmother "CyberTaz" wrote: Are you certain you're using the Insert *File* method and not Insert *Object*?
