Default Merge two tables

I want to merge two tables into one. Both of them have the same (highly
complex) layout and I want to "dock" one onto the left side of the other. I
tried to use the copy/paste command, but this destroys the layout. Any clues?

I don't think that is possible other than by formatting the document for
columns and having one table in one column and one in the other.
