Thumbs up Answer: change the layout of the selected text to two column?

Sure, changing the layout of selected text to two columns in Microsoft Word is pretty easy. Here are the steps:
  1. First, select the text that you want to change to two columns. You can do this by clicking and dragging your mouse over the text, or by holding down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard and clicking on each individual section of text.
  2. Once you have your text selected, go to the Page Layout tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
  3. In the Page Layout tab, you'll see a section called Columns. Click on the drop-down arrow next to Columns to see the available options.
  4. Select Two from the list of options. This will change the layout of your selected text to two columns.
  5. If you want to adjust the width of the columns, you can do so by clicking on More Columns at the bottom of the drop-down menu. This will open a dialog box where you can adjust the width and spacing of your columns.

That's it! Your selected text should now be formatted in two columns. If you want to change it back to a single column layout, simply select the text again and choose One from the Columns drop-down menu.

Under the Format menu, select Columns and choose 2 columns. That will apply
to the selection.

The clever bit is to get the columns of equal length. In Word97 that
requires a 'continuous section break' at the end of the part with
the two columns, can't answer for later versions.

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

If there is text above and below the selected text, Word takes care of
inserting the two Continuous breaks. There is, however, a Compatibility
Option that affects whether columns above a Continuous break are balanced.
