If this only happens in one particular document, try opening that
document and clicking on Tools | Unprotect Document. If all new and existing documents are locked for editing, then it's probably because you have not activated your Word/Office software, or because you have an expired trial version of Office 2003. What happens if you start Word and click on Help | Activate Product? If you are already activated, a dialog box saying so will appear. If you are not activated, the Activation Wizard will start. If you have an expired trial version, a dialog box will prompt you to enter a valid product key or purchase a key online. molly-ness wrote: tmy document is locked. i can't type or do anything, does anyone know how i get it back to a normal document? when i try to type it says "this modification is not allowed because the document is locked" could someone please help me. |

I am having the same problem: all documents new and old are locked. But my
Office software is activated, and it was not a trial version. Any ideas? Thank you! It is more likely that you are using Word 2007 that is either a trial
version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office has not been activated. In that version, the equivalent of the Tools menu item that garfield-n-odie mentioned is the Protect Document item on the Developer tab. If the Developer tab is not present on the Ribbon, click on the Office Button (the round pizza like thing in the top left hand corner of the screen and then on Word Options in the bottom of the dialog and in the Popular dialog, check the "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" box. However, as first mentioned, it is more likely that you are using Word 2007 that is either a trial version that has expired, or your copy of Word/Office has not been activated. -- Hope this helps. Hi P.,
That message can indicate several possibilities, one of which is that the document has been marked as 'final' in Word 2007 or that it is in fact locked for editing. Some other common issues can be: (a) you had a 60-day trial version of Office 2007 that has expired. (b) you had a 60-day trial version of Office 2007 that hasn't yet been activated. (c) You have a paid up licensed version of Office 2007 that hasn't yet been activated. Check Office button=Word Options=Resources=Activate to see if the app reports that it has been activated. ================= "Daddy_P" wrote in message ... The usual reason for this is that the application has gone into "reduced
functionality" mode. Either it is a trial version that has expired, or, if a retail version, it has not been activated and has now exceeded the number of times it can be used before activation is required. -- Suzanne S. I am using a dell notebook and have installed Office 2003. Went in today and computer is telling me everyhting is locked....... "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: Well, you need to activate the product. If it's Word 2003, use Help | Activate Product. If it's 2007, use Office Button | Word Options | Resources: activate Microsoft Office. -- Suzanne S. I think my case is the latter one -- "a retail version, it has not been activated and has now exceeded the number of times it can be used before activation is required." Please do respond, i badly need your help here ASAP! I might need a step-by-step guide on how to unlock it. Thanks a lot... "Suzanne S. It is locked because this is a trial version that has expired or you haven't
yet activated the product. -- Suzanne S. Barnhill Microsoft MVP (Word) Words into Type Fairhope, Alabama USA http://word.mvps.org "emmypoohbear" wrote in message ... So what's up with your machine that you cannot use it or why you are trying
to run the activation wizard? Is this still a corporate version? -- Terry Farrell - MSWord MVP "Thomas Fitzgerald" Thomas wrote in message ... This has happened to me 2x....
