Default Too many edits

I've been editing a word document, 219 pgs, in Word 2003. (specifically to
numbered lists) and an error message came up: "There are too many edits in
this document. This operation will be incomplete. Save your work."
What caused this?
Is there a limited number of edits per document?
I have more numbered list questions, but I will post those separately.
Thank you.

I think this message may result from having a lot of complex operations in
the Undo list, possibly combined with having limited resources for Word
(small amount of RAM or HD space). If you save, close, and reopen, you
should be able to continue working.
