Default change default style

A number of features in Word depend upon the default style being named
Normal. While you can change the default starting style to No Spacing (by
editing Normal.dotm and setting the first empty paragraph in Normal.dotm to
the desired style name), other features you use will sometimes automatically
use Normal. So, it can seem like an endless tug of war.

The easiest way to accomplish what you want is to reset the spacing of
Normal so that it behaves as you prefer. I assume you're using Word 2007:

1. Format a "Normal" paragraph using the No Spacing style.

2. In the Styles gallery in the Home tab, right-click Normal and choose
Update Normal to Match Selection.

3. Finally, right-click Normal in the Styles gallery and choose Modify. In
the Modify Style dialog, click to enable "New documents based on this
template".

If you're using Word 2003 or earlier (unlikely since No Spacing was
introduced in Word 2007), post back if you can't figure out how to do this.

Default change default style

Actually... while that method is the easiest way to directly accomplish what
you want, it's not necessarily the best way. The best way is to change the
document defaults (as pointed out by Beth Melton in another newsgroup). To
do this, in the Home tab, click the Styles launcher button (bottom right
corner in the Styles section). This opens the Styles task pane. At the
bottom of the Styles task pane, click the Manage Style button (3rd from the
left).

In the Manage Styles dialog, click the Set Defaults tab. There, set the
desired defaults for paragraph and line spacing (and any other settings you
care to change as well). Near the bottom, tick New documents based on this
template, then click OK.

This method is better because it is better integrated into the way that Word
works. It ensures better coordination with other styles and related
formatting, so you don't end up having to change lots of different styles
to obtain the desired results.
