If AutoFormat cannot do what you want, apply the style manually, or use Find
and Replace.

Do you have "Headings" checked? Are you typing something that looks like a
heading?

yes I have headings checked. I typed headings followed by paragraph text and
wanted to use Autoformat to convert the headings to Heading style 1 but did
not succeed.

It would probably be safer just to apply the Heading 1 style manually. You
can do this with Ctrl+Alt+1.
