Default How to use backspace or return key to deactive automatic numbering

I used to be able to use the backspace or enter key to end a numbered list.
Now, nothing happens when i try to end the automatic numbered list using
these keys. How can I get these keys to serve this function again?

To stop numbering, you can press Ctrl+Shift+N (which reapplies the Normal
style to text).
