What is the point of the reviewing pane?

Default Reviewing Pane

Primarily I use it to view the comments as well as edit comments that are in
the document. Depending on the version of Word, I have had trouble getting
the balloon containing the comment to stay displayed long enough for me to
click into it. I also choose not to use balloons for inserted and deleted
text.

If you click into the reviewing pane to view a change it doesn't go to that
change in the document does it? Can you only use it when using the show next
button to work through the changes?

Default Reviewing Pane

In Word 2003 and 2007 it does. However, in Word 2002 the Reviewing pane just
lists the inserted, formatted and deleted text.
