Default Track Changes: Hiding Commenters' Names

Is there a way to hide the commenters' names in a track change document
without removing their changes for confidentiality purposes in Word 2003?

Yes and no. You can remove all reviewer names by using the Removing Personal
Information on Save option but this isn't necessarily "hiding" them since it
deletes the names from the file. So if you need to retain the original, make
sure you use a copy of the file for this purpose.

You can find the option under Tools/Options/Security.

Have you tried checking "Remove personal information from file properties on
save" on the Security tab of Tools | Options?

Not that I know of. A workaround is to make two versions of the
document (one with tracked changes intact, and the other with personal
information removed on save or with comment authors' names modified with
a macro), but it could be a pain in the keister to keep the versions
synchronized if the document is frequently edited.
