Default Grouping multliple references

I am using Word 2002 and in my manuscript I often have several references
grouped together using numbered endnotes. They are now written in the form
1,2,3,4,5,6 when I add the commas in between, but is there anyway of having
them accumulated as 1-6 without actually deleting the endnotes.

Default

Insert the footnotes as usual but without the commas, then insert an en dash
after the 1 or before the 6. Then select 2345 and press Ctrl+Shift+H to
format the reference numbers as Hidden.
