Default Toggling Word Documents

When I toggle between two Word documents using the document buttons on the
task bar, they both disappear and Word shuts down altogether. Then I have to
go back into Word and recover them both to continue. How do I avoid this?
Am I not supposed to toggle using the buttons on the task bar? I have had
previous versions of Word and I have always operated this way with no
problems. I now have Word 2003. Thanks.
