When I highlight a block of copy and try to tab it over, it deletes the type

Press the Insert key once.

Ah, sorry. On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options,
check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces." -- Suzanne S.
