Default Reference tab Word

The reference tab (07) is grayed out - unavailable. Document is in print
layout and unprotected. Any idea?

Does this happen with a particular document only or with all documents?

If you copy the document, except for the final paragraph mark (¶), and paste
into a new document, does that make a difference?

In order to show/hide paragraph marks as well as other nonprinting marks,
press Ctrl+Shift+8.
