What is causing a Word document to change when I open it?
I've got a two page document, a resume, that apparently "changes" when I load
it into Word (v 2002 SP3). The symptom is that when I open the doc (by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer), and then immediately try to exit, this warning is displayed: Do you want to save the changes to "______"? I've found a couple of documents that do this, but most do not. I've experimented with imbedded date fields, and it's about the only thing I could think of that might cause this. Is there some orderly approach to find (and fix) the underlying issue? Thanks! |

Is there any problem with the file otherwise? If so, what? Otherwise...
It could be something as simple as a different printer driver than the one selected when the doc was last saved - especially likely if that was on a different computer. As long as you haven't made changes just click No to saving - but the message will appear next time, too. If the message irritates you, go ahead & say Yes to saving as long as there are no problems with the appearance & formatting... BUT: It could also be a Font Substitution issue if the doc was edited using different fonts than what are installed on the system where you're opening the file. You can check that out in ToolsOptionsCompatibility - click the Font Substitution button. If subs have been made it will tell you why, if not the button won't do anything. As above, if there is no disruption to the doc it should be safe to save with the subbed fonts. Either way, you may want to make a copy of the doc first & keep it as a backup - particularly if you need to do any updating that needs to be saved. -- HTH |:) Bob Jones [MVP] Office:Mac "PA Bob" PA wrote in message ... Hi ?B?UEEgQm9i?=,
I've got a two page document, a resume, that apparently "changes" when I load it into Word (v 2002 SP3). Date fields would almost certainly cause this. An update field is a change in the document... If you wish, you can turn the fields into static text by selecting then pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9. Or you can lock them to stop them from updating by selecting then pressing Ctrl+F11 (Ctrl+Shift+F11 unlocks).
