Default Multi level list does not automatically number paragraphs

I'm trying to use multilist and have successfully created the style for the
numbering scheme I want to use. But when I finish a paragraph and hit enter
I get a new line position but not the next number in the multi list. Once I
choose the style I can change the style my using the tab and back-tab. What
is wrong?

If your multilevel list is linked to heading styles, then this is to be
expected, as the "Style for following paragraph" for all heading styles is
Normal.

To add to what Suzanne has said, you can change the "Style for following
paragraph" in the Modify Style dialog box. You can display the dialog box by
typing the style name in the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S) and then
clicking Modify.

Also, whenever you are creating an outline with heading styles, you should
turn off the "Keep with next" setting (accessible via Format, Paragraph in
the Modify Style dialog box) which is enabled by default for the headings.
