Default how can i test in which version of Word a document is saved

I have a series of old documents - probably in word - but when I try to op
them in Word 2003 the file conversion dialog box opens and I can't find the
correct encoding to open the file so that the text is readable. I 'm familiar
with text conversion. The hex-startcode of the files are always "80 00 00 09
20 00 4f 7b".

Is there any software who can analyse a document to see in which type and
version it was made?

Many thanks for the answer

I can already tell you that those files are not from Word. If they were, the
first eight bytes would be D0 CF 11 E0 B1 1A E1 00.

You can try setting the "Files of type" dropdown in the Open dialog to "Recover
Text from Any File" and opening (a copy of) one of those files. You may be able
to see any text the file contains. If it was a word processor file, of course
you would lose any formatting.

Good luck!
