Default Mail Merge & Unprotected Form

Apologies if this needs to be in a Word Form forum but Im not sure if its a
mail merge or userform issue?

I have a word document which I am merging excel data into and the mail merge
works ok. The word document is an unprotected form (i.e. it contains text
field sand checkboxes). The mail merge adds customer data such as name
address etc. Below this I have a series of check boxes which I wish to
"tick" depending on client requirements.

The problem is that once merged, if I protect the form (in order to "tick"
the checkboxes") the form cant be protected (I presume because of the mail
merge). If I removed the mail merge and just had the word doc and I typed
in the data which I was merging by hand then I can protect the form and the
checkboxes work ok.

Am I doing something worng or is this just a limitation of my methodology?
