While working on a document originally created by someone else - when I
try to highlight and embolden (if there is such a word) one line, the
whole document changes to bold - how do I confine my formatting to what I
have highlighted?

Well, it doesn't ordinarily happen. It's not clear what causes this, but
most likely it's a poorly written add-in.

Sorry I don't understand that.
It happens in a bog standard Word document with no inserts pictures,
tables or anything but text.

All I can say is that I've never seen it, and there are many, many other
Word users who have never seen it. Do you have any add-ins installed?

An add-in is a "helper" application that adds functionality to programs such
as Word, and if the add-in is poorly written, as Suzanne wrote, strange
things may occur. If you are using Word 2007, look in Office button | Word
Options, Add-Ins category.

Since this is Word 2007, the problem *must* be an add-in, at least if the
Normal style is affected, because you cannot set the "Automatically update"
option for that style in the user interface.

I'm not sure the blame lies with me.
The document was composed on a friend's Word 2003. He found this effect
happening and it continued when I tried to edit the document on my pc.
Could this be so and in which case if I unticked the update-style
option on his version might that solve it?

From that description, the root of the problem is most likely your friend's
computer. (Once selected, the "Automatically update" option stays on until
you turn it off.) The fix is in the article at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...eformatted.htm.
